Introduction

Rhythms of the forest took on new forms as the preservation of life had become wholly dependent upon industrial crutches. Evolution of nature and industry had created a new hybrid biome; the forest foundry. Metallic accents glinted through the darkness while ferns grew, moths flew and fungi blew binary spores into the warm wet wind. This future had come quickly and thus we found Loris 2028.

Bellingham band combines art and music in a project with an environmental message

A Bellingham band and local artist have collaborated to create a unique art and music project focused on exploring humanity's relationship with the environment.

Funk/Dub band Proceed and artist Paul Kearsley recently released "Loris 2028," a 13-track CD accompanied by an illustrated, letterpress artbook. The songs and each corresponding page of the book follow the loris -- a small, nocturnal creature with a bionic leg -- through a night in the forest. The music and art encounter varying themes from evolution to extinction in a futuristic forest foundry.

"The concept this album explores, depicts a natural ecosystem that has been stressed to the point that it is completely dependent upon industrial machines to support life. This is ironic," Kearsley said, "because we are dependent upon those same systems to support ourselves."

Robotic flowers and mechanical animals creep through the moonlit forest designed and illustrated by Paul Kearsley.

"It's more than just a bunch of songs, it is an entire album. They all relate to each other from the Moonrise to the Moonset," said Karl Olson.

Longtime friends, Kearsley and Olson were the creative directors of this project. A full-time musician, Olson specializes in percussion and drums, though he employs hundreds of instrumental sounds on the album. Tim Holmes and Jesse Hunter are experienced Bellingham musicians who played the keyboard and the guitar respectively. Patrick Gaye of Slengteng Studio was responsible for the recording and mixing.

Loris 2028 is a rich musical and visual environment. This unique creative collaboration expresses an intriguing and pertinent message which makes one consider the nature of our future.
